Introduction to Tohoku University
Tohoku University, located in Sendai, Japan, was founded in 1907 as the third national university. Since its founding, Tohoku University has followed the principles of "Research First", "Open Doors", and "Practice-oriented Research and Education". There are currently about 18,000 students enrolled at the university and nearly 2,800 teaching staff, giving it an excellent student/teacher ratio. In a survey conducted by The Asahi Shimbun Company, Japanese high school teachers have consistently ranked Tohoku University no. 1 in their "overall assessment". With five research institutes attached to the university, Tohoku University offers world-class education and research opportunities.
Tohoku University is located about 300 km north of Tokyo along the Pacific Ocean coast in Sendai. international standards in the evaluation of academic research
contribution. In the annual ranking provided by this organization,
Tohoku University achieved the following results in 2011 .
Campus Life
Besides gaining an excellent education, students have ample opportunities to interact with each other. Currently,
there are over 1500 international students studying at Tohoku University and over 2000 in Sendai, making it possible to learn about several cultures while experiencing Japanese culture.
Through the more than 60 athletic and cultural clubs, students will have ample opportunities to form long-lasting friendships during their stay at Tohoku University.
In addition, newly enrolled international students are provided "tutors" , recruited from the Tohoku University student body,
to advise them on their studies and daily lives and assist them adjust to their new environment as quickly as possible.
*Special assigned staff from the AMC course office provides assistance relating to student life both on and off campus.
Support for International Students
In addition to Clubs Activities, Tohoku University provides various forms of support for international students.
The Center for International Exchange offers career and employment support and provides classes teaching students the skills and communication abilities necessary for gaining employment in Japan.
The University Counseling Center and Student Learning Adviser (SLA)
offers counseling services for a variety of concerns students might have in their academic and personal life. In addition, several volunteer groups- Mori Group, TUSFA, @Home, SIRA; MIA provide great support in settling down and adjusting to daily life in Sendai.
