Kazuaki HORI

1.What kind of the research are you doing?

My research focuses on the evolution of floodplains and coastal lowlands in Asia including Japan in response to sea-level and climate changes especially during the past 20,000 years. I approach research targets by combining field surveys (e.g., borehole survey), landform analysis, and sediment sample analysis.

Since I came to Sendai last year, I would like to conduct research in the Tohoku region.

2.What is the reason for starting your study?

As a child, I rarely left Hiroshima Prefecture, so all I wanted to do was to get out of the prefecture. There were times when I was disappointed because I mistakenly thought I could have gone to Niigata Prefecture, even though I had been to Nigata (Kure City). A vague desire to go far away led me to my current research and work related to the natural environment in Japan and abroad.

When I entered university, I was planning to go to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, but I thought that I could study environmental research in the Faculty of Science, so I selected to go the Department of Geography in the Faculty of Science. Upon entering, I found that what was being conducted there was not research on the environment as I had imagined, but on geomorphology, climatology, and human geography. As an undergraduate student, I had the impression that the entire department seemed laid-back, and I had a vague idea that it would be nice if I could make research my career.

In geomorphology, I am interested in the landform evolution of fluvial and coastal lowlands, which is also related to Quaternary studies, and I have been struggling and clinging to my research until now.

3.Message for prospective students

I have worked at several universities and experienced a variety of workplaces, including engineering (science and engineering), literature, and science. The curriculum, the subject of the research, and the research approaches differ greatly depending on the department, but because they belong to universities, what they do is ultimately “academic”.

The Faculty of Science at Tohoku University has a variety of research fields within each department, so whether you are an active person or a passive person like myself, you are sure to find a field that fits your sensibilities.

This is my second year in Sendai, and the nature in Aobayama, where the Faculty of Science is located, is amazing. Please visit Aobayama Campus and experience its magnificence.
