The major differences between these two are enrollment period, language and financial support.
As for the General Graduate Program, its exam is conducted twice a year for either October or April enrollment, and the classes are offered in either Japanese or English.
On the other hand, IGPAS accepts October enrollment only and classes are given in English. In addition, IGPAS offers Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship for students with excellent academic capabilities.

Yes. We ask all applicants to register Online Pre-Application. IGPAS Admissions Office reviews eligibilities of applicants based on the information from the Pre-Application. Those who fall into certain conditions are required to take a preliminary screening prior to application. Please refer to "2. ELIGIBILITY FOR IGPAS" of the IGPAS booklet to see the conditions. Preliminary screening information will be given by IGPAS Admissions Office.

Faculty members of the Graduate School of Science may not respond to emails from a stranger because of the amount of emails they receive every day. It would be advisable to provide much information on yourself (academic background, interest, and goal in detail) when sending an email. Please refer to "5. APPLICATION AND SELECTION (Step2)" in the IGPAS booklet. IGPAS Admissions Office may contact the faculty member to verify the receipt of your email upon your request, only if you have tried every means possible and still have not gotten a reply.

No. Obtaining consent of acceptance from our faculty members is required for the application. Application without a copy of email correspondence with your prospective supervisor, which indicates to have you study under him/her, will not be accepted.
Even though you have obtained consents from more than one faculty members, you are not allowed to apply for IGPAS with two different prospective supervisors' name. You have to decide one by the time of your application.
It does not have to be a Certificate of expected graduation. We need any official documentation to certify that you will graduate by September 30. If your expected graduation date or month is stated in an academic transcript, it can be used as a substitute material for a Certificate of expected graduation. A letter from a responsible official of your university with your expected graduation date or month is also acceptable as a substitute of a Certificate of expected graduation.
They must be originals. If you cannot submit the original by the deadline, submit its copy tentatively, with a note that briefly explains the reason and the expected date of submission.
Applicants whose native language is not English, must submit the score of English proficiency test. However, it does not have to be a TOEFL® TEST or IELTS score. They are just one of the examples. Please refer to "6. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS" of the IGPAS booklet to see other examples.

We do not have particular score requirements. Your English proficiency will not be judged solely by these scores but from all the application documents submitted.
We do not require GRE® TEST for international students, however, we accept the score if you have taken it, as a document to certify academic ability. This will allow us to better evaluate your application.

If you do not have your passport, submit an item proving your citizenship such as a photocopy of citizenship card, birth certificate, or census register. Please refer to "6. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS (item 12)" in the IGPAS booklet.
Applicants whose native language is English are exempted from submitting a test score of English proficiency.
No. The entrance examination will be conducted via phone, fax, email, or IP videophone. The committee members will contact applicants to instruct the method of screening after IGPAS Admissions Office reviews all application documents.
The examination will be managed independently by the committee members of each department, and it will be in the form of a written examination and/or an interview. The examination will be conducted in January, however, some departments might give the examination in late December. IGPAS Admissions Office is not in charge of the screening process and cannot provide the detailed information on the examination.
No. IGPAS Admissions Office does not have or provide any information regarding financial support other than the MEXT scholarship. It should be noted that scholarship availability for students is very limited and thus highly competitive in Japan, especially for international students who are not proficient in Japanese.
It is included in IGPAS application form. In the Form 1 "Application for Admission", you will be asked your intention of applying for the MEXT scholarship. You should simply choose "Yes" in the form for the MEXT scholarship application.
The MEXT scholarship results will be notified along with IGPAS entrance examination results on the website. Successful IGPAS applicants with MEXT scholarship will need to go through official paperwork afterward. The detailed instruction will be given by IGPAS Admissions Office after the IGPAS result notification.
