Message from Chair of Mathematical Institute
First of all, we express our deep gratitude for the encouragements and for offering the support.
We have confirmed the safety of all the faculty members and all the students including those from abroad.
We are currently looking into the damage suffered by the buildings and other infrastructures. The book storage space has been severely affected. In general we estimate a high cost for putting the library back to a working condition.
On the personnel front, the new faculty members who are to be appointed this April to our department will not be able to move to Sendai for a while, and all the students are instructed to stay with their parents or other places of safety till the end of April. Our inability to secure a proper working and living environment for them remains a grave concern. In the meantime, we are very grateful for numerous offers by other mathematics departments to accommodate our students to use their library and other facilities. When graduate students affected by the disaster, of our depertment as well as of other departments of the area, come to your university for help, we humbly ask for your kind considerations for their well-being within your capacity.

We have received numerous words of consolation and encouragement, in response to the loss and damage caused by the earthquake. We express our gratitude for your thoughts on us. We are also grateful for the generous offers of support. As for the inquiries of of donations, we have set up Recovery of Education and Research Fund. We promise our best efforts so that the fund will be used for the timely recovery of the environment for research and education in our department and our institute. We thank again for all the support you have shared with us in this hard times.

Academic Calendar (posted on April 9, 2011)
Spring Semester begins on May 6, 2011 for undergraduate students / April 26 for graduate students.
Fall Semester begins on October 3, 2011 as originally scheduled.
- (Undergraduate) 1st year students
  - May 6, Friday: Freshman Orientation (in Rigakubu Main Lecture Hall) [Registration desk opens between 8:45 and 9:45 AM.]
  - May 9, Monday: First day of classes (on Kawauchi-Kita Campus).
- (Undergraduate) 2nd year students
  - May 6, Friday: Guidance Session (in Room 202, Mathematics Building, Aobayama Campus) starts at 2:00 PM.
  - May 9, Monday: First day of classes (on Kawauchi-Kita Campus)
- (Undergraduate) 3rd and 4th year students
- Graduate Students
- Graduate Students who have already been enrolled for more than a semester
  You are requested to move your belongings in your office to the newly assigned office by the evening of April 25, Monday. Your cooperation is needed and will be much appreciated so that incoming students can use the office as soon as they arrive on April 26.
  Please contact your advisor and confirm details about when to come back to Sendai, where your new office is, and when to start seminars and so on.

Request for verifying the safety:
Currently enrolled students, JSPS Postdoctoral Fellows and Visiting Faculty should send a message to

verifying his/her safety. Please write, on the subject line of the message, your student id number, as well as your name, plus safety and the current location, e.g "subject: A9SB1099 Isumi Takagi, safe, at Sendai" Please describe further deails in the main text of the message.
- As of 19:00, March 19, 2011, more than 250 people informed us of their being safe. Thank you very much.
University of Tokyo and Kyoto University have enabled for Tohoku University students and researchers to use their system in order to have access to the electronic journals. Visit, for example, this page of the Library of the University of Tokyo (in Japanese).

The home page of Mathematical Society of Japan will continue to upload various information concerning the support system of the people affected by the earthquake. For example

The network system of the Mathematical Institute has been partially recovered. (March 18, 2011) This means the following:
- We can send e-mail messages to everyone who has an account at Mathematical Institute.
- Those who have set the forwarding address will receive e-mail sent to their accounts at Mathematical Institute.

First Message from Department Chair

My deepest condolences go out to those who were affected by the Tohoku Pacific Ocean Offshore Earthquake of Friday March 11, 2011. Moreover, I would like to offer my sincerest thanks to all warm messages to encourage us.

Currently, we are putting all of our efforts into confirming and ensuring that our students and faculty members are safe. In addition, we are assessing damage to the institute and aiming to recover the functioning environment for education and research as soon as possible.

I respectfully request everyone's continued support and cooperation in helping us.

Due to the extensive damages suffered from the earthquake, for some time, we are forced to close down the website of Mathematical Institute/Mathematics Depertment. This temporary website will be , in the meantime, used to communicate pieces of information conerning the Institute and the Department. The university website ( http://www.tohoku.ac.jp/english/ ) as well the Graduate School of Science ( http://www.sci.tohoku.ac.jp/index_e.html ) will also list important information as time goes by. Please check those sites regularly in the coming weeks.
