MATSUBARA

1.What kind of the research are you doing?

I am studying physical phenomena caused by interactions between light and matter. My work involves the following three categories: 1) to control materials via light irradiation, 2) to control light via the properties of materials, 3) to clarify the electronic, magnetic and electric properties of materials using light as a probe. By studying these topics in some attractive materials, I explore novel light-matter functionalities toward next-generation technologies, such as novel-principle-based optical electronics, ultrafast information processing, and light control methods represented by invisibility cloak, etc.

2.What is the reason for starting your study?

After I started studying physics in detail, I learned how fun and deep physics is and learned that various technologies have physical bases. Gradually, I became fascinated by scientists who can create the future and direct the era. The topic in which I was interested and saw massive potential was light. The 21st century is referred to as “the era of light”. I hope that, in the near future, light-matter functionalities based on new physical principles will be active everywhere.

3.Message for prospective students

Even now, in the 21st century, despite science and technology being highly developed, there are still many undiscovered principles. Open a new door that no one knows, and try to feel the excitement of discovering untapped gold veins (I also want to know that feeling).
