1.What kind of the research are you doing?

I am developing skeletal rearrangement reactions using metal catalysts. Skeletal rearrangement reactions are chemical reactions in which covalent bonds within a molecule are selectively cleaved and reconnected at different positions, leading to the synthesis of new molecules. This approach is expected to enable the construction of molecules that were previously difficult to synthesize using conventional methods. Additionally, since no atoms are wasted before and after the reaction, it is attracting attention as an environmentally friendly synthetic method.
Currently, I am focusing on the design of substrates and the evaluation of catalysts to achieve a novel skeletal rearrangement reaction. Although it is challenging to make the reaction proceed exactly as envisioned, I am continuously refining my approach through trial and error to develop a unique reaction. I hope that my research will contribute, even in a small way, to the advancement of the field of organic chemistry.

2.What is the reason for starting your study?

University is a place where you can fully pursue your interests. Many people may not yet know exactly what they are passionate about, but I myself only had a vague thought in high school—"Maybe organic chemistry is interesting?" However, that small curiosity became the starting point, and now I am fully immersed in my research.
That is why it doesn’t matter how trivial the initial impetus. If you have even the slightest curiosity about chemistry, I believe the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science at Tohoku University is the perfect place for you. Here, you will find peers with whom you can engage in friendly competition, and dedicated professors who provide excellent guidance.
In addition, I encourage you to explore things beyond academics at the university. Compared to high school, you will be able to spend your time and money more freely. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I did not join any clubs and had a rather limited social circle. Looking back now, I feel that I should have tried clubs, activities, and experiences during my first and second years, which I could only do at that time.
At university, there are many opportunities to grow not only academically but also in many other areas. I hope you take on new challenges in a variety of ways and enjoy a fulfilling campus life!

3.Message for prospective students

(a)Please cherish what you don't understand.
(b)Please keep in your mind that all understanding is a temporal one.
Because, once you think that you totally understand something, the path to deeper understanding will be closed.
