Student Insurance, etc. (mandatory to join)

All School of Science International Students at Tohoku University are required to join the following types of insurance, etc. The students should purchase the insurance, etc. to ensure safe conditions of their school life at the School of Science.

1. Gakkensai: Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research

"Gakkensai" is insurance that covers the expenses for physical injuries due to accidents while the students are engaged in educational and research activities and commute to university as a student.

・1 Year: 1,000 yen
・2 Years: 1,750 yen
・3 Years: 2,600 yen
・4 Years: 3,300 yen

【How to join】
Fill in the necessary information to the designated payment form and pay the fees at JP Banks.

2. Inbound Futai Gakuso: Comprehensive Personal Liability and Accident Insurance for International Students

"Inbound Futai Gakuso" is a comprehensive type of insurance assuring international students of their life and covers liability, injury, and illness when a student causes some damage to others and gets injured in some accidents.

As a general rule, the new Science students who live alone in the university dormitories should join the insurance of E type.
* Those who live in private apartments and have joined the Comprehensive Renter's Insurance could join the insurance of F type.

・1 Year: 13,060 yen
・2 Years: 22,850 yen
・3 Years: 32,660 yen

【How to join】
There are two methods of payment; pay at JP bank or a convenience store.
■ Pay at JP Bank
Fill in the necessary information to the designated payment form and pay the fees at JP Bank by using the form.

Visit the website and register the necessary information to pay the fees at a convenience store.

3. Emergency Secure Plan (ESP)

It is a plan designed for the School of Science International Students at Tohoku University and all international students who belong to the School of Science are obligatory to join the ESP regardless of their student status*.
(*All regular and non-regular students, excluding short-term visiting trainees.)

The ESP is the plan combined with Medical Assistance Service (language assistance service) and Emergency Expense Insurance.

【How to join】
1. Access the webpage and enter the necessary information
Login code:tohoku
Password: tohoku

2. Pay the fees by the method you have selected (credit card or convenience store)
■ Credit card: Only VISA and MASTER Card are accepted.
■ Convenience store: Available at LAWSON, MINI STOP, Family Mart, and Daily Yamazaki
* Seven-Eleven cannot accept the service fee payment.

Visit the Student Support Section at the School of Science and receive an ESP membership card.

4. National Health Insurance (NHI)

National Health Insurance is a nationwide mutual aid program funded by policyholder premiums to reduce medical expenses. All residents of Japan (staying longer than three months) are required to enroll in the program unless they are non-students and are enrolled in another social insurance program in their working place.

【How to join】
・Usually, the enrollment procedure is made at the ward office when you visit for the registration of your living address.
・Monthly fee payment is required and usually, the annual payment invoice, from April to March, is sent to you in June.
・The premium amount is determined based upon the income of the previous year. If you declare that you had no income in Japan during the previous year, your premiums will be reduced by about 70 percent.
・When you visit hospitals or clinics, you have to bring and show your health insurance card.
