
Scientist Mildred S. Dresselhaus, nicknamed the Queen of Carbon, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Tohoku University at a ceremony in Sendai. A symposium to mark the event was held by the Graduate School of Science at Aobayama Campus the day before the ceremony.
It is only the eighth time that the university has conferred an honorary degree.
Dresselhaus, who is currently a professor emerita at MIT, is best known for her work in carbon science, including breakthrough techniques for studying the individual layers of carbon atoms.
