　同賞は、日本地球惑星科学連合が、SpringerNature誌から出版しているオープンアクセス電子ジャーナルであるProgress in Earth and Planetary Science誌において、表彰年度の前々年および前年に出版された論文を対象とし、表彰年度の前年末日までのアクセス数が多い1～3編程度の論文に贈られます。
